Ben Ihde and Peder Garnaas-Halvorson and their teammates from CFANS and the Carlson School won the top prize of $5000 in the international division of the Acara Challenge, a yearly competition among student entrepreneurs who focus on addressing social and environmental challenges. Their company, Kaloli Energy, delivers responsibly-sourced charcoal to customers' homes in Kampala, Uganda to displace tree-based charcoal which destroys ecosystem resources.
